Class sessions & attendance
Run each class meeting from the timetable — log what was taught and homework, and take student attendance.
A class session is one real meeting of a class. Sessions are created when you activate a timetable group — the weekly template in a timetable group becomes dated meetings. Teachers log what was covered in the Activity Journal, and take attendance from the session on the timetable or on the dedicated Student Attendance page.
Who this is for
Teachers running their classes day to day, and administrators overseeing attendance.
Where to find your sessions
The same sessions appear in two places:
- Activity Journal — your running list of sessions and the daily teaching record. Administrators see every class's sessions; teachers see their own. This is where you log what was taught; it shows whether attendance has been taken, but you don't take it here.
- Timetable — the same sessions on the weekly schedule. Open a session's slot to mark its attendance (you can't mark one that's still in the future).
Session statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Scheduled | An upcoming session from the timetable. |
| In progress | The session is happening now. |
| Completed | The session is finished and the teacher has logged it. |
| Auto-completed | A past session the system closed automatically because it wasn't logged in time. |
| Cancelled | The session was called off. |
| No-show | The class didn't take place. |
If the usual teacher is replaced for one session, a substitute teacher can be recorded on it.
Log what was taught
Open a session and record what happened:
- The lesson that was taught.
- The topics covered.
- Any homework set.
- Notes and attachments — observations or files for the record.
This builds a clear history of what each class has covered.
Take attendance
You take attendance in one of two places — not from the Activity Journal:
- From a session — open the session on the timetable and choose Mark attendance.
- From the Student Attendance page — a dedicated page to record and review student attendance by day or by session, where the school's attendance settings also live.
How attendance is taken depends on your school's attendance mode, set once for the school:
| Mode | How it works |
|---|---|
| Per day | Attendance is taken once a day for the whole class — usually by an administrator. |
| Per period | Attendance is taken in each session, by the teacher. |
See Configure attendance modes.
Attendance statuses
For each student, mark:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Present | The student attended. |
| Absent | The student didn't attend. |
| Late | The student arrived late. |
| Half day | The student attended part of the day. |
You can mark a whole class at once and add a remark to any student. Attendance can be entered for today and a few recent days, within a window your school sets — so a missed session can still be recorded shortly after.
Common use cases
- Daily teaching log — after class, record the topic and homework so families can follow along.
- Mark the register — take attendance each period (or once a day, depending on your mode).
- Cover lesson — record the substitute teacher on the session.
- Backfill — enter yesterday's attendance within the allowed window.
