Grading setup
Configure year-wide grading policy, categories, per-level schemes, subject exams, and competencies in one guided flow.
Grading setup is the single place to configure how grades work for the selected academic year. It walks through year policy, shared grade categories, per-level schemes and marking periods, subject category weights and exam templates, then competencies.
Who this is for
Administrators configuring grading before teachers enter marks.
Open Grading setup
Go to Assessments → Grading setup. Everything here uses the academic year in the year switcher (or a draft year when you open setup from an academic year wizard).
Work the steps in order — later steps depend on earlier ones:
| Step | What you set |
|---|---|
| Year policy | School-year defaults — display scale, rounding, calculation method, display formats, exception codes, grading scale bands. |
| Grade categories | Shared category vocabulary for the year (Exam vs Continuous). Weights are set later per subject. |
| Levels | Per level: marking periods, grading scheme, external exams, and optional overrides. |
| Subjects | Per subject: category weights and exam templates for the term. |
| Competencies | Proficiency scales, competency library, and which subjects use competency grading. |
Switching steps warns you if a draft is unsaved.
Year policy
Set how subject averages are computed and shown for the whole year, then Save.
Typical controls:
| Area | Examples |
|---|---|
| Grade scale & rounding | Display scale (e.g. /20), rounding precision and mode, optional manual average override. |
| Calculation method | Category weighted or Total points; how uncategorized items and makeups are handled. |
| Display formats | Primary format (numeric, letter, mention, GPA…), pass threshold, class ranking. |
| Exception codes | How Absent and Exempt behave in averages. |
| Grading scale | Bands that map numeric scores to letter / mention / GPA. See also Grading scale. |
Grade categories
Define the shared names used across subjects — for example Homework (Continuous) and Mid-term (Exam). Add rows with a name, purpose, optional description and colour, then Save.
Exam-purpose categories are filled by exam templates; continuous ones by free assessments. Weights are not set on this step — they are set per subject under Subjects.
Levels
Pick a level, then use the sub-tabs (recommended order):
| Sub-tab | What you'll do |
|---|---|
| Marking periods | Split each term into periods (weights within a term must total 100%). See Marking periods. |
| Grading scheme | Weight terms and external exams into the year grade (must total 100%). |
| External exams | Define regional/national exams, covered subjects, and enter scores. |
| Level config | Override year defaults for this level only (scale, format, calculation…). |
| Period configuration | Override settings for one marking period. |
Copy from last year can bring prior-year scheme and external-exam setup into levels that are not already configured.
Subjects
Pick a term, then a subject from the tree. Use:
| Tab | What you'll do |
|---|---|
| Categories | Choose which grade categories apply and set their weights (counting weights should total 100%). |
| Exams | Add exam templates under each weighted Exam-purpose category. |
You can set the subject's coefficient, copy settings to other subjects, and Copy from last year. Exam templates need Exam categories with weights first — see Exams.
Competencies
Optional parallel track alongside numeric grades. Sub-tabs:
| Sub-tab | What you'll do |
|---|---|
| Scales | Define proficiency levels (label, points, meets standard). |
| Library | Build the competency trees (general and per subject). |
| Subjects | Enable Numeric + competency (or keep Numeric only) and pick the scale. |
See Competency-based grading for how teachers record proficiency.
Tips and best practices
- Finish Year policy and Grade categories before Levels and Subjects.
- On Subjects, configure Categories before Exams.
- Keep year, level, and period overrides intentional — blank override fields inherit from the level above (or the year).
