Assignments
Set homework for a class, let students submit their work, grade it with feedback, and have it count toward the gradebook.
An assignment is a piece of work you set for a class — homework, a project, an essay. Students can submit their work online, you grade it with feedback, and the grade flows into the gradebook.
Who this is for
Teachers setting and grading work, and the students who submit it.
Create an assignment
Open Assignments
Go to Assignments and choose Add assignment.
Fill in the details

Set the submission rules
Decide how students hand in their work:

| Submission type | Online (students upload files) or In class (handed in on paper — you just record the grade). |
| Allow late submissions | Let students submit after the due date, optionally up to a later cut-off. |
| Files per submission | How many files a student can attach. |
| Accepted file types | Restrict uploads (for example pdf, docx). |
| Allow resubmission | Let students replace their submission before the deadline. |
Save
The assignment appears for the class, and students can submit from the due window.
How students submit
For an online assignment, a student opens it and uploads their files, with an optional note. If you allowed resubmission, they can replace their work until the deadline (or the late cut-off).
A student's assignment shows as Pending until they submit, then Done — or Not done if the deadline passes with nothing submitted.
Grade and give feedback
Open the assignment's grading view to see every student's submission in one place. For each student, enter a score and optional feedback. When you're ready, publish the grades to make them visible to students and families.
Grades stay private until you publish
Scores and feedback you enter aren't visible to students until you publish them — so you can finish marking first.
Counts toward the gradebook
An assignment can be placed in a grade category (e.g. Homework) and given a weight, so its grades feed into each student's subject grade. See Gradebook.
Common use cases
- Homework with a file — set an online assignment; students upload a PDF.
- Paper hand-in — set an in class assignment and just record the grades.
- Second chance — allow resubmission so students can fix and resubmit before the deadline.
