Grading scale
Set up grading scales and grade bands so numeric scores are converted to letter grades, mentions, and GPA values on the gradebook and report cards.
A grading scale is a set of grade bands that convert a numeric score into a letter grade, mention (e.g. Bien, Très bien), or GPA value. Scales are used everywhere a numeric grade is displayed — the gradebook, the student view, and the report card.

How grading scales work
The scale is applied after a numeric grade is computed. The grade falls into a band based on its value, and the band's letter, mention, and GPA are shown alongside (or instead of) the number, depending on the display format you choose.
Example — a /20 scale:

You do not need to fill in every column — for example, you can use mentions without GPA values, or letter grades without mentions.
Scale levels
Scales can be set at two levels:

Set up a grading scale
Go to Assessments → Grading setup → Year policy (grading scale / gradebook settings).
Open the scale editor
Click Edit scale. If no scale exists yet, the editor opens empty.
Add grade bands
Click Add band for each grade band. Fill in:

Cover the full range
Bands must cover the complete possible score range without gaps or overlaps. A warning appears if any scores between 0 and the maximum are not covered.
Save
Save the scale. It takes effect immediately for any grade displayed at that level.
Display format
The grading scale controls what is available to display. The display format controls what is actually shown in each context. In Assessments → Grading setup → Year policy, open Display to choose:

The primary display format is used in the gradebook grid. Additional formats can be shown in expanded views and on report cards.
Level overrides
To give one level a different scale — for example, if one level uses /20 while another uses /100 — open Assessments → Grading setup → Levels, pick the level, open the level Config tab, and set a grading scale override for that level. The level-specific scale applies everywhere that level's grades are displayed.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a grading scale to use the gradebook?
No. The gradebook works with raw numeric scores even without a scale. A scale only adds the display layer (letter, mention, GPA). You can add or change a scale at any time without affecting the stored scores.
Can I use letter grades only, without numeric scores?
The gradebook stores and calculates grades numerically. A scale that maps every numeric value to a letter is the best way to display grades as letters — but the underlying computation still uses numbers.
What if two bands overlap or leave a gap?
The scale editor shows a warning. Overlapping bands are not allowed. Gaps mean some scores would not match any band and would show without a letter or mention — fill in the full range to avoid this.
Can students see the grading scale?
Students and parents see the letter or mention applied to their grade in the student view, consistent with whatever display format is configured. The full band table is not shown to students.
Can I set a different scale for external exams scored /100?
Yes. Use the per-period config override on the external exam's marking period entry. Set the grading scale to one defined for /100, and it applies only to that exam's scores while the rest of the level uses its own scale.
