Create subjects
Add the subjects taught at your school so they can be assigned to classes, teachers, and timetables.
A subject is a topic taught at your school — for example Mathematics, Physics, or Arabic. Subjects are assigned to classes, linked to teachers, and placed on the timetable. Creating them is one of the first academic-foundation steps.
Who this is for
Administrators setting up the curriculum for an academic year.
Before you start
- An academic year must exist and be selected in the year switcher — each subject belongs to the selected year.
- It helps to have created your rooms first if you want to restrict a subject to certain room types (for example a Lab for Chemistry).
Steps
Open the Subjects page
From the admin sidebar, go to Academic → Subjects.
Start a new subject
Click Add Subject to open the create form.
Fill in the subject details
Complete the fields below, then click Create Subject.
| Field | Required | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Subject name | Yes | The display name, e.g. Mathematics. |
| Code | Yes | A short identifier, max 15 characters, e.g. MATH. |
| Description | No | Optional notes about the subject. |
| Colour | No | A colour used to identify the subject across the timetable and gradebook. |
| Allowed room types | No | Restrict where the subject can be scheduled (for example Lab or Computer room). Leave empty to allow any room. |
Confirm the subject appears
The new subject is added to the Subjects list immediately. Repeat for every subject in your curriculum.
Tip
Pick a distinct colour for each subject. It makes the timetable far easier to read once scheduling begins.
